Starting a new chapter in life isn’t easy
College can bring in a lot of stress
College is more than parties, making new friends, and trying new things. It’s also a period of significant change, with different challenges and responsibilities than what you had in high school. College students face daily stressors and academic demands that can distract us from what really matters. Yourself.
Feeling scared and alone is completely normal. Getting thrown into a 2 or 4-year college with no background knowledge can throw anybody off, especially if it is far from your home. There is a stigma around college students having to keep up with the bustle of a constantly moving life, but when you do that, you forget about yourself. Getting in contact with a therapist can help.

College student counseling for LBGTQ+ individuals
Being in college is hard. College is one of the stepping stones to finding yourself.
When you are being discriminated against for exploring yourself, and being who YOU are, It makes you want to shut down. You don't need to hide. We understand.
-
Campus Policies and Practices Often Do Not Help
-
To complicate matters, many college policies and practices on campuses have not helped to improve the challenges many LGBTQ+ students already face.
-
-
On-campus housing tends to be binary-centered
-
This forces many who do not identify as strictly male or female to live alone or leave campus
-
-
LGBTQ+ students may not always have the choice to live with a roommate who is also LGBTQ+, or comfortable having an LGBTQ+ roommate
-
LGBTQ+ students can face bias and unequal opportunities in certain academic disciplines, including science, technology, engineering, and math
Micro-aggressions can be common among both faculty and non-LGBTQ students.
Anti-LGBTQ bigotry, abuse, and hatred can wreak havoc on one’s physical and mental health.
Victimization can rob LGBTQ survivors of their sense of safety, protection, and confidence in the world.
LGBTQ students aged 13 to 21 have disproportionately high rates of low self-esteem and depression.
Many report skipping school because they are afraid of being harassed, indicating heightened anxiety.
Also, many young LGBTQ people believe and perceive they are different from their peers, which can lead to social anxiety, loneliness, and depression.
Since studying is difficult when you’re stressed, anxious, or depressed, these mental health problems may have a negative impact on your studies.
The probable reasons for these issues arise from:
-
The social stigma of homosexuality/non-heteronormativity
-
Experiences of discrimination
-
Lack of social and family support
-
Lack of sufficient finances
