Counseling for Children & Play Therapy In Kentucky

Help your child heal in an environment tailored to their needs.

Therapy Can Help!

There are many reasons that a caretaker may decide to seek therapy or counseling for a child, and all are valid. Counseling can help your child learn to better process and regulate emotions, recover from trauma, or learn to cope with a mental health concern like anxiety.

Many caretakers choose to seek therapy for the following concerns:

  • Divorce or separation of parents or caretakers

  • Death or serious illness of a loved one

  • Trauma, such as experiencing abuse or or another traumatic event

  • Bullying

  • Moving, or family/child relocation

  • Substance use in the family

  • Behavior concerns or aggression

  • Mental health concerns, such as depression, anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive disorder

This is not an exhaustive list and there are many more reasons why therapy may be a good step for your child. Our child therapists are able to see clients with any of these concerns.

What is Play Therapy?

Play therapy is to children what counseling is to adults. Play therapy utilizes play, a child's natural medium of expression, to help them express their feelings more easily through toys instead of words.

The child can use toys and play to share what is bothering them even when they do not have the verbal language to openly express it. The therapy experience will empower your child to grow, learn, and heal in a way that is natural and enjoyable for them.

Play therapists often utilize sand trays, drawings, toys, clay, water colors, sensory objects, musical instruments, dolls, puppets, role play, games, books, and so much more in a session with your child. Children are often excited to come to therapy because it is fun!

Where Can A Mindsight Therapist See My Child?

Therapists at Mindsight Behavioral Group see children both in person and online.

While younger children typically benefit more from being seen in person, older children are able to engage well with online counseling and many have seen great results.

Our counselors see children in all of our in-person locations, including Somerset, Campbellsville, and Louisville, Ky.

Parenting A Child In Therapy

Parenting is hard. Let’s start there. There is no one “correct” way to do parenting as every child is different and has different needs. Sometimes, parents aren't sure what to do next or they don’t have the tools to help their children meet their specific needs. That’s okay! No one has all the tools in the world. We’re all built differently, experience different life circumstances, and understand and see the world in different ways. It’s okay to reach out and ask for help when you feel at a loss.

Here are some things that may help you as your child goes to therapy:

  • Going to therapy alongside your child or separate from your child. This can help the healing process between both the parent and the child, especially if there are communication concerns or personality differences.

  • Learning that sometimes children are different from their parents and it’s okay to work with them on their individual needs. Remember that children are still learning how to be a human and they need some time to understand the world in their own way.

  • Remember that you’re on the same team and a part of the same unit. People on a team tend to have different strengths that they bring to the table. We can help you learn how to utilize those in a meaningful way to help your team work together better!
